Acupuncture is part of a system of medicine that was developed in place China centuries ago. This comprehensive system known as Oriental Medicine (OM) or Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) consists of acupuncture, herbs, nutrition, tuina massage, qigong, martial arts and meditation. Acupuncture is used to treat illness as well as to maintain health.
|
Diagnosis
The diagnosis is formulated through a series of questions that inform the acupuncturist how the body systems are functioning and where there is a disharmony. Disharmony in a system or between systems is what leads to illness. Information from palpating the abdomen, taking pulses and looking at the tongue also help to formulate the diagnosis. The terminology used in Oriental Medicine is different from that used in Western Medicine yet it addresses many of the same issues that Western Medicine does. Oriental Medicine is also often used to complement Western modalities.

The Needles and Technique
Sterilized disposable needles are painlessly inserted into the chosen acupoints. There is often a sensation of warmth, tingling or pressure around the area of the hair-thin needle. This is a healing reaction. The needling technique can vary from person to person depending upon the diagnosis and which style of acupuncture is right for the individual. There are Chinese, Japanese and Korean styles of acupuncture. All of these systems are based upon the Chinese Classics of internal medicine. All practitioners in placeStateMassachusetts are required to take an exam for certification in Clean Needle Technique to insure the safety of their patients.

Other Types of Treatments
Treatments by an acupuncturist are not always limited to the use of acupuncture needles. Moxibustion (an herbal heat treatment), magnets, massage and movement therapies are often used in conjunction with and sometimes in place of the needles.
|
 |
Number of Treatments
The number of treatments will vary from one individual to another depending upon the severity and longevity of the illness as well as the constitutional strength of the individual. Treatments are tailored to meet the needs of the individual -- whether it is a health maintenance program or to heal chronic or acute illness.
|
Benefits
Acupuncture can correct or improve most illnesses by utilizing the body's natural ability to heal itself. It will regulate and harmonize the body's energy, enhance the immune system and act as an analgesic. Acupuncture also provides relaxation and a feeling of psychological well being.

Licensing & Registration
The State of Massachusetts grants license to acupuncturists who have completed a three year program and have demonstrated their competence through training, internship and state-regulated examination
